Providing online and remote hospital, community and GP appointments


Surrey Heartlands recognises the importance of adapting and modifying the way patients access advice and support during the COVID-19 outbreak to ensure ongoing care. Wherever possible, all clinically urgent hospital operations, procedures and appointments are still going ahead during this time. At the same time, we know the importance of reducing footfall in our GP practices, hospitals and clinics for the safety of our patients and staff to minimise spread of the virus in our community.

As such, we have put a number of mechanisms in place to assist patients including, where clinically appropriate, telephone or video consultations instead of face-to-face appointments.

How will my hospital outpatient appointment change?

Some outpatient appointments may now take place using a secure web-based platform called Attend Anywhere. Your appointment will take place on the same date and at the same time as previously booked, but instead of a face-to-face consultation on site, will be held as a telephone call or video consultation.

Attend Anywhere is now being used for outpatient appointments at Royal Surrey County Hospital, Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals, East Surrey Hospital and Epsom and St Helier Hospitals, with the community service providers Central Surrey Health and First Community Health and Care and with Surrey and Borders Partnership.

How will my GP appointment change?

GP practices across Surrey have also taken action to protect patients, staff and the local community by introducing a telephone or online triage system for GP appointments.  The aim is to significantly reduce the number of patients attending practices in person to reduce the risk of spreading or contracting COVID-19, in line with national guidance.

If you need a GP appointment, it will initially be held on the telephone or via the secure AccuRX video call platform.  The GP will do all they can to help you. Once assessed by the GP, you may be asked to attend your practice for a face to face appointment.

We recognise that not everyone has access to a computer or smart phone so phone appointments will also be available for those able to communicate by phone.  We are carrying out an Equality Impact Assessment on this urgent service change to ensure that we take all steps possible to make reasonable adjustments for people with protected characteristics.
